Nearly all the old parking meters around City Hall and Cesar Chavez Plaza have been replaced by new, smart parking meters as of last Friday.
“This is an exciting time,” says Jerry Way, Director of Public Works. “A parking technology revolution is happening in Sacramento. Parking meters will be easier to use and more convenient and truly an asset for 21st century drivers.”
The technology in the new meters makes it easier for customers to pay for parking. These machines accept credit cards, quarters, dimes, nickels, dollar coins, or a combination of credit card and coins. A future phase of the meters will include an app that allows customers to locate available parking spaces and receive a text alert when the meter is about to expire and pay by cell. Parking, however, is not transferable, meaning that once a payment is made at a smart meter, the time cannot be transferred to another.
The City will continue to install parking meters in Old Sacramento, downtown, and midtown over the coming months. Installation in Old Sacramento will start Wednesday, Feb. 5.
