In an effort to educate and engage Sacramento residents, businesses and community leaders in the City’s planning process, the Community Development Department is now accepting applications for its 2015 Citizen’s Planning Academy. The free, eleven-class course, which begins March 2, provides participants with a background in the fundamentals of city planning and covers a broad spectrum of planning and development-related topics and issues.
“The Citizen’s Planning Academy gives citizens an ‘insider’s’ look at how planning shapes our community,” said David Kwong, the City’s Planning Director. “Through the academy, our graduates become more informed and involved in the planning process, and many have gone on to become strong community advocates, and even serve on City Council and commissions.”
Topics include the development review process, the City’s General Plan, the Planning and Development Code, regional planning, transportation planning, urban design, economic development, and affordable housing.
More than 300 Sacramento citizens, business owners, and community leaders have graduated from the Planning Academy since its inception in 2002.
Classes will take place over 11 weeknight evenings and two Saturday mornings from March 2 to May 18, followed by a graduation/City Council special presentation.
