Winter Storm Update

Emergency Operations Center Update

The Emergency Operations Center (EOC)  has been activated with limited staff, with most staff performing assignments remotely. The EOC team is identifying needs and contingencies for their section should a fully staffed EOC be required.

The Bureau of Reclamation has not yet released the high volume of water that was anticipated, but the EOC is preparing in the event an urgent situation arises.

Department Operations Update

A modified Department Operations Center has been active monitoring levees, creeks, and canals, and rain patrol crews in the field. It will re-open tomorrow morning at 6 a.m.  to monitor another storm that will be coming our way Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning and will be coordinating with the EOC.

  • Since the beginning of the storm on January 7, 2017 the City has received a total of 3.18”.
  • City distributed more than 5,000 sandbags this weekend
  • 311 has responded to more than 400 storm related calls, and both DOU and Public Works have addressed any storm-related aftermath and clean-up.

Road Closures

There are two roads that remain closed which are Del Paso Blvd. between Railroad and Northgate due to the floodgates closure, and Raley Blvd. at Magpie Creek.

The City and County are also opening up South Side Park, 2107 6th Street, as a “weather refuge”,  Tuesday night, Jan. 10, from 6 p.m. to Wednesday at 6 a.m. The pool house will be open for those who need to come in from severe weather, similar to the opening of a warming center at South Side Park, when temperatures drop to 40 degrees or below.

While this opening is a first, the County and City are going to be establishing criteria for future openings, based on weather forecasts. The City will be supplying the facility and staff, and the County is assisting with supplies and coordination of resources with the City.

Statement from both Mayor Darrell Steinberg and County Supervisor Phil Serna.
