New Sacramento Director of Public Works named

Interim Director Hector Barron named Director following an extensive recruitment process.

Hector Barron has been appointed Director of Public Works today by City Manager Howard Chan. Barron is responsible for leading the Department of Public Works of 725 employees and managing a $200 million budget with divisions of Engineering Services, Facilities and Real Property Management, Fleet Management, Maintenance Services, Parking Services, Recycling and Solid Waste, and Transportation.

“Hector has been doing an outstanding job as Interim Director since Jerry Way’s departure last September,” said City Manager Howard Chan. “His leadership proved instrumental most recently when the City negotiated a deal with Verizon to bring on Smart Cities solutions to, among many other things, improve traffic safety. I look forward to working with Hector to make Sacramento an even better place to live and work,” Chan said.

“I’m excited for Hector to lead our Public Works Department,” said Mayor Darrell Steinberg. “He has risen to every challenge and speaks first and foremost about his incredible department team, which is the mark of a leader who understands the true strength and value of working together.”

Barron has been with the City of Sacramento’s Public Works Department since 2000. Most of his City service was as the City’s Traffic Engineer overseeing transportation planning, review of development projects, traffic engineering and investigations, signal operations and maintenance, and maintenance of roadway signs, markings, and street lights.

Prior to being the City’s Traffic Engineer, Barron was responsible for transportation funding, programming, prioritization and development of the City’s transportation Capital Improvement Program projects and programs.

Before that, he was responsible for transportation funding, programming, prioritization and development of the City’s transportation Capital Improvement Program projects and programs.  Prior to coming to Sacramento in 2000, he worked for the Cities of Modesto and Los Angeles in the area of delivering Public Works projects.

Barron received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Davis and is both a registered Civil Engineer and Traffic Engineer in the State of California.
