Sacramento continues to make great strides toward implementing its bicycle network. Just this last year, we’ve moved forward on many projects and initiatives highlighting our commitment of becoming a more bike-friendly community. Here is a look back at the City’s top 10 projects this year!
10. City College Pedestrian and Bike Bridge
The new bridge enhances bicycle and pedestrian safety for City College students and serves as a transit oriented development for the surrounding community. The new bridge spans over the Sacramento Regional Transit Light Rail tracks and Union Pacific Railroad Tracks adjacent to Sacramento City College and connects the Curtis Park community to City College and the Light Rail Station.
9. Freeport Avenue Bike Lanes
The new one mile bike lane improves bicycle and pedestrian safety along the corridor from 4th Avenue to Sutterville Road. The project, which was spearheaded by McClatchy High School students, and the SAFFE advocacy group, strongly aligns with the City’s Bicycle Master Plan.
8. Riverfront Reconnection Project
A new connection from Capitol Mall to Old Sacramento was completed with a new connection facilitating travel between Front Street and 2nd Street.
7. Urban Bicycling 101 Class
The Urban Bicycling 101 Class is a great introduction or a refresher for people who bicycle on-street in Sacramento. This FREE in-classroom course is intended to help you bike more often and confidently. For more information or to register, please visit the City’s Bicycling Program.
6. Bikeway User Map
We recently created a Bikeway User Map designed to make it easier for residents to get out and explore the 255 miles of bike lanes and 78 miles of paved paths in the Sacramento region.
5. Bike Parking
The City continues to install bicycle racks and bike corrals in front of businesses at no cost! We also adopted the Bike Rack Design and Placement Standards ensuring all new racks function.
4. Bicycle Advisory Committee
In an effort to broaden involvement and transparency, the Bicycle Advisory Committee meetings are now in Council Chambers. Agendas and videos can be viewed here.
3. Bike Share
The Tower Bridge Bike Share Preview recently launched in the Sacramento region. SACOG, along with city partners, City of Sacramento and West Sacramento, rolled out a 50 Smart Bike system that includes stations and routes along West Sacramento and portions of downtown and midtown Sacramento. 2. Sunday Street
Earlier this summer, the City of Sacramento in partnership with Council Member Steve Hansen, hosted our first “Open Streets” event – Sunday Street on Broadway. The route closed the street to cars and opened it up for fun, allowing participants to experience what a people and community centered urban space feels like. Open Streets events are part of a global movement of transforming streets into pop-up parks and activated public spaces.
1. Vision Zero
The City of Sacramento takes transportation safety seriously. In January 2017, City Council adopted the Vision Zero Goal of zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2027. The Vision Zero effort is a traffic safety philosophy that rejects the notion that traffic crashes are simply “accidents,” but instead preventable incidents that can and must be systematically addressed. The City is currently developing a Vision Zero Action Plan. The plan will identify the factors contributing to traffic deaths and severe injuries, and proven safety methods integrating education, traffic engineering, enforcement, and evaluation.
