City Manager Howard Chan announced Daniel Hahn will be the City of Sacramento’s 45th Police Chief. Hahn has almost 30 years of experience in law enforcement, 23 of which were serving the Sacramento Police Department before accepting the position as Police Chief for the City of Roseville in March 2011.
Swearing in ceremony followed by community event
He will be sworn in on Friday, Aug. 11, at 3 p.m. at his alma mater California State University, Sacramento, in the University Ballroom. The public is invited to attend. Following the ceremony, the public is invited to a free community BBQ at McClatchy Park, with food, children’s activities and community resource information. The event starts at 4:30 p.m.
Why Daniel Hahn was chosen
“My goal with this search has always been to appoint an experienced, dynamic, and energetic professional to lead our organization,” said City Manager Howard Chan. “Not only does Daniel Hahn have a breadth of experience in law enforcement, he is well respected within the Sacramento Police Department and the community. I’m thrilled to be welcoming him back to lead one of the nation’s finest departments.”
The amount of input from the community regarding the attributes, experience level, and priorities of the next police chief during this recruitment has been unprecedented.

Hahn will lead the Police Department of more than 1,100 sworn and civilian staff. Hahn has served as Roseville Police Chief since March of 2011. There, he launched numerous initiatives. He developed long-term strategies to address homelessness, reorganized the department with a focus on Community-Oriented Policing, and implemented a unique recruiting program to attract a more diverse pool of applicants.

Background
Hahn rose to Captain at the Sacramento Police Department over the course of 23 years where he:
- managed the department’s $123 million budget
- led the process to implement new mobile data computer and in-car camera systems
- earned a reputation for improving relationships between police and the community by creating the first volunteer managed Community/Police Resource Center, and implementing the first Cops and Community Celebration.
Hahn is a Sacramento native, growing up in Oak Park. He lives in south Sacramento with his wife and two children.
He had served with the Sacramento Police Department for 23 years, starting as a Community Service Officer at 19 in 1987 while attending Sacramento City College. He became an officer while still in community college, and later graduated from California State University Sacramento with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1995. He also has a Master in Public Administration degree from National University, which he earned in 2001. In 2011, he became an American Leadership Forum Fellow.
