Cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento seek bridge architect for I Street Bridge Replacement Project

The City’s prime consultant engineer, Mark Thomas, has issued a Request for Qualifications to engage a bridge architect to join their team for final design of the I Street Bridge Replacement Project.

The selected architect will provide bridge architectural and aesthetic design services for a new movable lift bridge across the Sacramento River. Architects interested in receiving a copy of the Request for Qualifications should contact Mark Thomas at RFQ@markthomas.com. Please include company name and contact information as part of the request.

The selection for the bridge architect will involve a two-step process. Proposers will be required to submit their Statement of Qualifications for architecture and aesthetic services for the new movable bridge, all submittals are due by February 23, 2018 at 3 p.m.  Following the review of the qualifications received, the selection panel will create a shortlist of up to three candidates that will be invited to submit their proposal for the proposed aesthetic designs.  The shortlisted candidates will receive a stipend to develop preliminary design concepts as part of their proposal. The selection committee, composed of representatives from both cities, will then select the final architect based upon the design concepts received.

“Given the prominence of this project, we anticipate receiving proposals from world-renowned bridge architects,” said Jesse Gothan, project manager for the City of Sacramento. “The cities are looking for an iconic functional design that captures the vision of both cities.”

The I Street Bridge Replacement project will include construction of a new bridge upstream from the existing I Street Bridge. The new bridge will cross the Sacramento River between the Sacramento Railyards and the West Sacramento Washington District and provide a new bicycle, pedestrian, and automobile crossing.  The existing I Street Bridge would continue to be used by the railroad. Both cities are completing a feasibility study on converting the top deck of the existing Bridge for bicycle and pedestrian use.  The approach viaducts to the existing I Street Bridge will be demolished, resulting in better access to the water front in both cities.

Information about the I Street Bridge Replacement Project can be found on the City’s website.
