Oriental fruit fly quarantine: What to do with fruits and veggies

A portion of Sacramento and Yolo Counties have been placed under quarantine for the Oriental fruit fly. View a map of the quarantine boundaries.

To prevent the spread of fruit flies from infested homegrown fruits and vegetables, the California Department of Food and Agriculture is urging residents to not move any fruits or vegetables from their property.

What to do with your fruits and vegetables

At the property of origin, fruits and vegetables may be:

  • Juiced
  • Frozen
  • Cooked
  • Ground in the garbage disposal
  • Double-bagged and disposed of in the garbage bin

Do not dispose of fruits and vegetables in the yard waste bin.
