Community invited to learn more about the C3 Project, Oct. 22 at Convention Center
The C3 Project will continue to bring more people to the downtown core, retain existing jobs, create new ones, and increase spending at local businesses.
The City of Sacramento recently introduced the C3 Project, a new brand that highlights the renovation and expansion of the Convention Center, Memorial Auditorium, and Community Center Theater, also known as the Convention Center Complex.
The name C3 was chosen in partnership with Visit Sacramento as a holistic way to refer to the work on the three buildings during the multi-year construction period.
“The C3 Project strengthens Sacramento’s place as a destination city,” said Mayor Darrell Steinberg. “These three amazing City projects will soon provide a major economic benefit to the region by creating state of the art venues for performers, visitors and residents alike.”
C3 Project to be completed in phases to minimize impacts to patrons, residents and business owners
A community meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 22, from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Convention Center, Room 202. During the meeting, project managers will provide updates about the project, major milestones, potential construction impacts and answer questions.
The first phase of the project began in early June 2018 with the renovation of the Memorial Auditorium. Renovations will enhance the patron’s experience and allow the Auditorium to host all scheduled performing arts events during the renovation of the Sacramento Community Center Theater.
Major construction milestones for the Convention Center and Community Theater
- The Convention Center will begin its renovation/expansion in December 2018 and will host conventions into summer 2019 before its closure; it will reopen in November 2020.
- The Community Theater will begin its renovation in May 2019; and will reopen in September 2020.
“As a representative of this district, I believe that these projects are not only responsible, but a smart investment in our tourism economy,” said Vice Mayor Steve Hansen.
“The City has revitalized the west end of K Street with the Golden 1 Center and now our focus is on transforming the east end across from the Capitol. The C3 Project will continue to bring more people to the downtown core, retain existing jobs, create new ones, and increase spending at local businesses.”
City Council approved issuance of bonds Sept. 25
The Sacramento City Council on Sept. 25, 2018 unanimously approved the issuance of up to $350 million in bonds to finance the renovation/expansion of the Convention Center, the Memorial Auditorium and the Community Center Theater.
The bonds will not be repaid from the City’s general fund. Instead, they will be repaid by what’s known as the “transient occupancy tax,” or TOT. This is a 12 percent tax on hotel-room and short-term rental stays used for tourism-related projects. In addition, local hotels have agreed to pay for the construction of the Convention Centers’ new ballroom, which will cost approximately $45 to 50 million.
Overall, the estimated $196 million renovation/expansion of the Convention Center also will add meeting rooms, exhibit halls and more lobby and kitchen space. The $16 million renovation of the Memorial Auditorium will add seating, acoustic enhancements and other audio/visual upgrades. At roughly $85.7 million, the renovation of the Community Center Theater will enhance the theater’s aesthetic appeal, improve its lobby and make the venue more accessible to disabled patrons.
