City expands free meter holiday parking to include four additional holidays

Residents and visitors can now enjoy free metered parking during four additional holidays. Last night, City council approved adding four more holidays:

  • Martin Luther King, Jr’s Birthday
  • Washington’s Birthday
  • Cesar Chavez’s Birthday
  • Veterans Day

The six other holidays include:

  • New Year Day (January 1st)
  • Memorial Day
  • July 4th
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

“The City’s Parking Division is dedicated to making the downtown experience pleasant, convenient and accessible,” said Matt Eierman, Parking Manager. “The addition of these four holidays will provide consistency to customers so that all major holidays allow for free metered parking.”

With the addition of these four holidays, the City now has a total of 10 holidays and 52 Sundays a year when meter payment exemptions are provided. The City also offers an additional 32 consecutive days of meter payment exemptions each year during the City’s Annual Gift to Shoppers program, which starts the day after Thanksgiving and extends through Christmas Eve.

In the last few years, the Parking Division has upgraded its technology to make parking easier downtown, including the ability to stay parked beyond the posted limit with the Parkmobile app and reserving a spot in select garages and parking lots during special events.

It is important to note that on any free meter day, all other posted parking regulations are still enforceable, such as time limits, No Parking ZonesCity Services, and color zones.
