The City of Sacramento Department of Utilities earlier this month received the 2019 EPA WaterSense Excellence Award for Excellence in Education and Outreach at the WaterSmart Innovations Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas.
The EPA recognizes partners that help advance the national WaterSense program in their own communities. Sacramento Department of Utilities was one of 13 winners nationwide.
The EPA specifically called out DOU’s Leak Free Sacramento pilot program that was launched in 2018 to help residents in disadvantaged areas repair leaks. The agency also cited City-offered rebates for high-efficiency toilets, WaterSense labeled irrigation controllers and the “Break up with your lawn” campaign that highlights the DOU’s turf replacement program as reasons for the award.
“One of our goals is to protect, preserve and enhance water resources, the environment, and the community,” said Department of Utilities Director Bill Busath. “This award reflects our ongoing commitment to develop a culture of efficient water use in Sacramento. I am proud of the hardworking employees that developed these innovative water-saving programs and outreach efforts.”
This is the second award that DOU has received this year for its water conservation efforts. Earlier in 2019, it received the Gold Level of recognition from the Alliance for Water Efficiency, which is given to water conservation programs that comply with a set standard (the G480 Standard) from the American Water Works Association.
