New film incentive program launches to foster media production in Sacramento

The City of Sacramento’s Film + Media office has opened its first round of applications to award five grants to sustain and foster growth in film and television production in the city of Sacramento.

Two grants will be made to applicants with budgets over $100,000 and two grants will be made to applicants with budgets $100,000 or below. One additional grant of $2,500 will be awarded per round for 75% of post-production done locally. The first application window is open now and applications are due by midnight Nov. 30.

“The Film + Media incentive will help sustain and foster growth by subsidizing permit fees and reduce the cost of expenses for production companies that operate in the city,” said Film Commissioner Jennifer West.

The City will have a total of three rounds for submitting applications for grants:

  • Round 1: Oct. 15 through Nov. 30, 2021 – 11:59 p.m.
  • Round 2: Dec. 1, 2021 through Feb. 15, 2022 – 11:59 p.m.
  • Round 3: Feb. 16 through May 15, 2022 – 11:59 p.m.

Grants can be used for:

  • Required services and permitting fees by City of Sacramento staff and/or departments, including police, fire, permit fees, parking fees (inter-department transfer of funds);
  • Reimbursement awards where an applicant has demonstrated a need that exceeds City services support, where qualified expenses occur within the city (i.e., hotel nights, rental cars, rental equipment, location fees, catering, local hires, post-production, etc.); or
  • Reimbursement awards for post-production support.

The program is open to productions filming at least 50% of the project in the Sacramento region with at least two locations in the City of Sacramento. It is also open to productions where 75% of post-production is done locally.

Eligible productions include feature length films, short films, episodic television, television pilots, television movies/miniseries, documentaries, docuseries, commercials, music videos, and unscripted television

The incentive program is funded through the City’s Measure U fund. Grant applications will be reviewed and scored by panel consisting of staff, industry peers and economic development professionals.
