How to get free mulch at one of five events during ‘Mulch Mayhem’

City Utilities staff are inviting residents to attend a “Mulch Mayhem” on May 21 to get free mulch, which helps prevent evaporation, improve soil health and control weeds.

The event will held at the City’s south-area corporation yard (5730 24th St.) and is part of the City’s efforts to keep trees and landscapes healthy during severe drought.

“We had many trees die off during the last drought,” said William Granger, City water conservation coordinator. “Adding two to three inches of mulch around shrubs and four to six inches around trees can lock in moisture and keep them healthier during hot and dry conditions.”

The event is from 8 a.m. to noon and is limited to City of Sacramento residents.

Granger says that people should bring their own shovels, containers and tarp to cover mulch in their vehicles.

“While there will be a small area for people to load themselves, we strongly encourage people to bring a truck, they will get through the line faster,” he said. “There is a limit of 1 cubic-yard of mulch per customer.”

Other municipal agencies are also giving away free mulch at several events from 8 a.m. to noon across the region:

The City has been under a “watch alert” since August 2021 and is asking people to reduce their water use by 20 percent.
