With the National Weather Service extending its excessive heat warning through Friday, Sept. 9, the City of Sacramento has expanded operations of its cooling locations, including its Outreach and Engagement Center and its community centers.
The City’s Outreach and Engagement Center (3615 Auburn Blvd.) now will be open from 10 a.m. to midnight through Friday.
In addition, seven community centers through Friday will remain open until 8 p.m., offering people places to escape the heat into the evening. The community centers are:
- Sam & Bonnie Pannell (2450 Meadowview Road)
- George Sim (6207 Logan St.)
- Joe Mims, Jr. Hagginwood (3271 Marysville Blvd.)
- Belle Cooledge (5699 South Land Park Drive)
- South Natomas (2921 Truxel Road)
- Oak Park (3425 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.)
- Coloma (4623 T St.)
The City of Sacramento’s Office of Emergency Management, Department of Community Response and Youth, Parks and Community Enrichment Department are working together to provide these extended operations to counter heat-related safety impacts to the community.
“The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures well over 100 degrees every day this week,” said Bridgette Dean, director of the Department of Community Response. “When it’s that hot for that many hours in the day — and that many days in a row — we have to respond with longer hours at our cooling locations.
Sacramento Regional Transit also is offering free rides to any of the cooling centers around the region.
