City awards $4 million in ‘California Creative Corps’ grants to local organizations

The City of Sacramento’s Office of Arts and Culture, in coordination with the state’s California Creative Corps program, is awarding $4 million in grant funding to 26 local organizations to create outreach, engagement and media campaigns for the capital region.

The Creative Corps program, backed by Gov. Gavin Newsom and the state legislature, looks to increase public awareness on topics such as health and safety, water and energy conservation, climate mitigation, emergency preparedness, social justice and civic and community engagement.

“I would like to congratulate the organizations selected for this important grant funding,” said Melissa Cirone, program manager in the Office of Arts and Culture. “The City of Sacramento strongly believes in the power of the creative community to inspire and affect change, and we have no doubt that these projects will have a positive and profound impact on our region.”

The City of Sacramento in 2022 applied for and was selected to implement the Creative Corps program for the capital region, which includes Sacramento, Yolo, El Dorado, Alpine and Solano counties.

The program consists of two types of grants:

Applicants applied for the grants this past spring. They were scored through a peer review panel process, and 26 organizations were recommended by the panel for funding at the June 12 Arts & Creative Economy Commission meeting.

Here is the list of awardees:

$117,000 grants

$300,000 grants

The goal was to fund one-year projects that are cross-sector in nature and benefit both rural communities and those that demonstrate the highest level of need, as indicated by the California Healthy Place Index, Cirone said. Additionally, 70% of every grant award must go directly to pay artists who are involved in the project.
