Summer is officially here, and for many Sacramento residents, this means celebrating Fourth of July and other community events with barbecue grilling and fireworks displays.
The Recycling and Solid Waste Division wants to remind those celebrating about the importance of using safe practices when disposing of fireworks, briquettes, and propane tanks after a gathering.
“We want to encourage residents to be extra careful when disposing of fireworks, briquettes, and propane tanks, due to the potential for these materials to cause a fire,” said Jesa David, spokesperson for the Division.
Residents should follow the guidelines below when disposing of these materials.
Used (or unused) fireworks:
- Completely submerge fireworks in a bucket of water. Allow to soak for at least 15 minutes, or overnight for larger fireworks.
- Double wrap the soaked fireworks in plastic wrap or plastic bags so they do not dry out.
- Place wrapped fireworks in the garbage container.
Charcoal briquettes:
- After grilling, spread out the coals so they do not touch.
- Leave the coals overnight to cool down and ensure they are fully extinguished before adding them to the garbage container.
- Briquettes that are still warm can start a fire when put in the garbage container or even inside the garbage truck.
Empty propane tanks:
- For grills that use propane, the tank should be fully emptied and brought to the City’s hazardous waste facility for free disposal.
