The Sacramento City Attorney’s Office is inviting students to celebrate Law Day this May by participating in an essay and illustration contest.

Seventh- and eighth-grade students are invited to enter by April 11. This year’s Law Day theme is “The Constitution’s Promise: Out of Many, One,” which highlights the Constitution’s role in uniting a diverse nation.

Judging will be based on content, creativity, clarity, punctuation, grammar, spelling, and originality. City staff will select the winners.

Winners will be recognized and receive an award at the Sacramento City Council meeting on April 22, 2025, at 5 p.m. Prizes are as follows: $100 for first place, $75 for second place, and $50 for third place.

“This is a great opportunity to involve local youth in not only learning about Law Day and the significance of the Constitution and our legal processes, but also doing that in a fun, creative way,” said Audreyell Anderson-White, Senior Deputy City Attorney with the City of Sacramento. “We look forward to seeing the submissions and how participants choose to interpret the theme.”

Law Day was established in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower as a national dedication to the principles of government under law. In 1961, Congress designated May 1 as the official date for celebrating Law Day in the United States.

Students may enter by mailing an original copy of their essay or illustration to:
