Changes are coming to the City of Sacramento’s parking meter system to enhance reliability, security, and efficiency for drivers in response to ongoing challenges, primarily repeated vandalism resulting in high repair costs, and delays due to a lack of replacement parts.
The Department of Public Works is implementing changes to improve the parking experience and ensure consistent access to functional meters.
To enhance efficiency, the changes include:
- Replacing single-space meters with more durable pay stations at multiple locations.
- Removing coin payment options at single-space meters.
- Continuing to provide multiple cashless payment options, including card payments, ParkMobile app, and text-to-pay.
- Retaining coin payment options at pay stations and parking garages.
“Our goal is to ensure that our parking system remains functional, reliable, and easy to use for all drivers,” said City Parking Manager Staci Hovermale. “These upgrades will help reduce maintenance delays, improve security, and offer a more seamless parking experience while still providing multiple payment options.”
Recent replacements include areas around Southside Park and along R Street, with plans to evaluate other locations for potential upgrades in the future.
Beyond improved functionality and reliability, these changes support the City’s broader goals for managing the public right-of-way. Parking is a limited and valuable resource, especially in high-demand areas. According to staff, a modernized system helps promote fair access to curb space, encourages turnover that benefits small businesses, and reduces congestion by improving mobility and access.

- Parking at a meter where coins are no longer accepted: Drivers should use one of the available cashless payment options.
- Parking at a space with no meter: Follow signage directing users to the nearest pay station or use mobile payment options.
- Parking at a meter where coins are still accepted: If the coin receptor is functional, coins can still be used. If it is broken, users should use an alternative payment method.
