Let the (mulch) mayhem begin: Free mulch and compost available at May 17 giveaway

Sacramento residents are invited to pick up free mulch on May 17 during the City’s annual Mulch Mayhem giveaway.

“Mulch is one of the easiest and most effective ways to conserve water in landscaping,” said William Granger, the City’s water conservation coordinator. “Just a few inches of mulch can make a big difference, especially during the hot, dry summer months.”

Mulch provides several benefits to landscapes, including reducing how often plants and trees need water, improving soil health, and acting as a natural weed barrier.

The free event will be held at the Sacramento Marina (2710 Ramp Way) from 8 a.m. to noon, or while supplies last.

In addition to mulch, residents can also pick up free bagged compost, which can further improve soil health and promote plant growth.

Attendees can either bring a truck or trailer for staff to fill or shovel their own mulch at the self-loading station, says Granger.

“We encourage everyone to bring their own shovel, containers and a tarp.”
