Sacramento’s parks are the perfect backdrop for family gatherings, friendly games, and sunny afternoons. As more residents take advantage of these outdoor spaces, the City of Sacramento’s Department of Youth, Parks, and Community Enrichment (YPCE) is sharing a few friendly reminders to help everyone enjoy their park days to the fullest.
“Our parks are the heart of the community — spaces where neighbors connect, kids play, and memories are made,” said YPCE Director Jackie Beecham. “We encourage everyone to help keep parks welcoming and safe by planning ahead and treating them with care.”
Whether you’re meeting up for a casual picnic or hosting a large event, here’s how to make your next park visit easy and enjoyable:
Know before you go
Planning an event?
If your gathering will have 50 or more people or you expect to be there for more than 30 minutes, you’ll need a Certificate of Park Use to reserve a spot. A permit ensures you have exclusive use of a group area — often complete with tables, barbecues, and shade structures.
Applications must be submitted at least two business days in advance. Walk-in reservations are prioritized, but forms can also be submitted online. For major events involving music or large equipment (like jump tents), additional permits may apply.

Thinking about vending in the park?
The City does allow sidewalk vending in public parks — but you’ll need a Sidewalk Vending Permit. Be sure to indicate that your location is in a park when you apply.

Keep it safe, clean and beautiful
Help preserve the beauty of our parks by properly disposing of trash and caring for your pets. If bins are full, please bag your waste and place it neatly next to trash barrels.
Remember:
- Smoking is prohibited in all City parks.
- The possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited in all City parks, except if permitted for a Special Event.
- If bringing a portable barbecue, it must be used in a designated picnic area.
- Keep dogs leashed unless you’re at one of Sacramento’s designated off-leash dog parks. Always clean up after your pet.
- Leave no trace: Take everything you bring with you.
Park Rangers provide security response to service requests received via 311 calls and routinely patrol areas of all parks.
Enjoy the park — and help others enjoy it too
Outdoor fun is encouraged — just be mindful of neighbors and the surrounding community:
- Keep music at a respectful volume. Any amplified entertainment (like DJs, live bands, or music played through speakers) requires a special event permit.
- Stay on designated roads and parking areas. Follow all signage and do not block driveways or streets.
- Keep roads clear and give emergency vehicles the right of way. Vehicles are prohibited on lawns, pathways, and turf.

If you notice an issue while visiting a park — such as overflowing trash, maintenance concerns, or noise — the fastest way to report it is by calling 311.
For non-urgent public safety concerns — such as crimes that have already occurred or if you need to speak with an officer — please call the City’s non-emergency number at 916-808-5471.
In the event of an emergency or a crime in progress, call 911 immediately.
