The Sacramento Fire Department is urging residents to report illegal fireworks using its community reporting mobile app. Fines for setting off illegal fireworks have increased significantly this year, with violations now subject to penalties of up to $10,000.
“Even a single spark can ignite a massive fire, resulting in severe property loss or even death,” said Sacramento Fire Marshal Jason Lee. “Always use fireworks labeled ‘safe and sane’ which are tested and approved by the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Setting off illegal fireworks like skyrockets, Roman candles, M-80s or cherry bombs can now result in a hefty fine.”
The Sacramento City Council recently approved more enforcement tools to curb illegal fireworks to protect neighborhoods from fires, prevent property destruction and ensure the safety of residents. They include:
Increased fines now reach up to $10,000: Fines for the use of illegal fireworks are $1,000 for the first violation, $2,500 for the second violation within the first year, and $5,000 for each additional violation within the year of the first violation. A $10,000 fine applies in high-risk areas such as parks, schools, river parkways, and critical infrastructure or for the manufacturing of fireworks. Fines may be greater depending on the quantity of fireworks used or stored.
Host liability: Property owners and renters may be held responsible if illegal fireworks are used on their property, unless they take immediate steps to stop the activity and contact law enforcement.
Limited times for “safe and sane” fireworks: These fireworks — which are not explosive, not aerially launched, and have been tested and approved by the Office of the State Fire Marshal— can only be discharged between noon and 10 p.m. on June 28, and between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. from June 29 through July 4. The sale of safe and sane fireworks is limited to June 28 through July 4.
How to report illegal fireworks in the City of Sacramento
Residents reporting illegal fireworks should call the non-emergency fire number at 916-808-3473 (FIRE).
They also can use the free Sacramento Fire Department Community App, which is monitored by the Sacramento Fire Department. The app is available for Android and Apple.
Please note that the City is not always able to immediately respond to reports of illegal fireworks due to the volume of calls received. If staff are not able to respond immediately, they will follow up on the reported information as soon as possible.
