City celebrates completion of Del Rio Trail Bridge, completing full trail connection

City leaders, staff and community members gathered Tuesday to celebrate the completion and opening of the Del Rio Trail Bridge, marking the final milestone in the Del Rio Trail project and completing a fully connected route between south Sacramento and downtown.

The bridge, which carries trail users over Interstate 5 and Riverside Boulevard, was celebrated at an event attended by Mayor Kevin McCarty, Councilmember Rick Jennings and representatives from the Department of Public Works and California State Parks.

Construction on the bridge was finalized Dec. 10. With the crossing now open, residents can now walk, bike or roll along the Del Rio Trail without interruption, connecting south Sacramento neighborhoods to downtown and the Sacramento River Parkway.

The majority of the 4.8-mile Del Rio Trail opened to the public in May 2024. However, the bridge component remained closed after the City of Sacramento determined it was not built to required specifications and rejected the work. In August, crews began removing the existing overhang structure and rebuilding the bridge to meet all design and safety standards.

“I want to thank everyone for their patience along the way,” said Adam Randolph, senior engineer with Public Works. “This was a challenging project, and we’re just as excited as the public to see the bridge complete and open.”

The Del Rio Trail provides a low-stress, multi-use path through south Sacramento, linking neighborhoods, parks and regional trail systems. City leaders said the fully connected trail represents a significant investment in active transportation, community connectivity and quality of life.
