Homelessness Response Report: Citywide work includes multi-department response to private property in north Sacramento

The City’s Incident Management Team (IMT) received 652 calls for service last week and responded by engaging people experiencing homelessness, offering services and shelter options, and ensuring compliance with City laws and ordinances.

From Feb. 2-8, the IMT responded to 546 unique locations, including a large encampment on private property in north Sacramento that required coordinated, multi-department action.

For more than nine months, the City worked to address the encampment. Because the site was not City-owned, City staff first attempted to work with the property owner to bring the property into compliance and resolve health and safety concerns.

After several months without voluntary action, the encampment was declared a public nuisance, allowing the City to move forward with abatement under its municipal authority.

Once authorized, the IMT coordinated a multi-department response to resolve the site. The effort included the Sacramento Police Department, Code Enforcement and the Department of Community Response, which conducted outreach, ensured compliance with City ordinances and completed a full cleanup of the property.

The site has now been cleared and cleaned, addressing long-standing concerns and improving conditions for nearby residents and businesses.
