The Sacramento Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint Friday night within city limits as part of an effort to improve roadway safety and deter impaired driving.
The checkpoint is scheduled for May 15 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at a location determined by data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, according to the department.
Officials said the primary goal of DUI checkpoints is to enhance public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sgt. Anna Mahoney said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
Police remind drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications and some over-the-counter drugs can interfere with a person’s ability to drive safely. Driving under the influence of marijuana also remains illegal in California, despite the legalization of medicinal and recreational cannabis.
According to the department, drivers convicted of a first-time DUI can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
