Gain insight into local government operations: Apply for the 2026 City Management Academy

The City of Sacramento is now accepting applications for the 2026 City Management Academy (CMA), a structured learning program designed to educate, increase transparency, build community partnerships, and deepen public understanding of how local government functions.

Through weekly in-person sessions, CMA provides participants an opportunity to learn how the City is managed and operated, discuss challenges facing the City, and learn about strategies used to address them. From budgeting and policy development to public safety and infrastructure, CMA offers residents and business owners a behind-the-scenes look at City operations.

The program encourages meaningful civic engagement by connecting participants with City staff, elected officials, and the essential services that shape Sacramento’s neighborhoods.

“The City Management Academy gives participants a closer look at how local government operates and the many services that support Sacramento residents every day,” said Ari Green, Community Engagement Analyst. “We hope participants leave the program feeling more informed, connected, and empowered to take part in civic life.”

The 2026 session will be held in person from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesdays, Aug. 19 through Nov. 4, at City Hall, Room 1119. Dinner will also be provided at 5:30 p.m.

The curriculum includes presentations from over 20 departments and divisions, covering topics such as economic development, public safety, budget development, and policy-making.

This year, the City is piloting an expanded 12-week program based on feedback from past participants. The updated format will provide additional opportunities for civic engagement activities, field trips, and collaboration among participants throughout the program.

To be eligible, applicants must reside in the City of Sacramento or own a business in the city. Applicants must also be at least 16 years old. A $50 materials fee will apply to participate in the program. The materials fee can be waived on a case-by-case basis.

Those interested can find the application and more information about the City Management Academy here.

Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. July 17.
