The Sacramento Police Department issued 31 citations during a recent traffic safety operation focused on protecting people walking and biking in some of the city’s busiest corridors.
During the four-hour enforcement effort on July 2, officers conducted 38 traffic stops at J Street and 17th Street, J Street and 24th Street, and L Street and 13th Street.
Officers issued:
- 26 citations for crosswalk-related violations
- Five citations for other traffic violations
The operation focused on the most dangerous driving behaviors that put pedestrians and bicyclists at risk, including failing to yield the right of way, speeding, illegal turns and other violations.
“We all have places to be and not everyone gets there by car,” Sgt. Anna Mahoney said. “Bicyclists and pedestrians have the same rights to the road but face even more risk without the protections vehicles have. We should all be looking out for one another.”
The Sacramento Police Department reminds everyone to help keep roadways safe by following traffic laws and staying alert.
Drivers should:
- Slow down, especially near intersections and crosswalks.
- Yield to pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks.
- Avoid blocking crosswalks while waiting to turn.
- Never drive impaired.
Pedestrians should:
- Cross at marked crosswalks whenever possible.
- Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing and carry a flashlight when walking at night.
- Avoid stepping into the path of approaching vehicles.
Bicyclists should:
- Obey traffic laws and ride in the same direction as traffic.
- Use lights at night and wear a helmet.
- Use bike lanes when appropriate.
- Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
The enforcement operation was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
