Front Street Animal Shelter is sharing simple precautions pet owners can take to protect animals from heat-related illness during hot weather.
Dogs and cats can overheat quickly because they do not cool themselves as efficiently as people. Pets primarily regulate their body temperature by panting and through their paw pads.
“Hot weather can become dangerous for pets very quickly, whether they are outside, exercising or left inside a vehicle,” said Andrea Haverland, public information coordinator for Front Street. “Providing shade and fresh water and keeping pets indoors during the hottest parts of the day can help prevent a serious emergency.”
Pet owners should follow these safety tips:
- Never leave a pet unattended in a vehicle. Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly, even when it is parked in the shade or the windows are cracked.
- Provide pets with plenty of fresh water and access to shade or an air-conditioned indoor space.
- Limit walks and other exercise during hot weather. Schedule outdoor activities for the early morning or evening, when temperatures are cooler.
- Check the pavement before walking a pet. Place the back of your hand on the surface for several seconds. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for an animal’s paws.
- Remember that fans may not cool pets as effectively as they cool people.
Signs of heatstroke can include heavy panting, excessive drooling or thirst, difficulty breathing, lethargy, vomiting, lack of coordination, seizures or unconsciousness.
If a pet shows signs of heatstroke, move the animal to a shaded or air-conditioned area and apply cool, wet towels to its head, neck and chest. Offer small amounts of cool water and seek veterinary care immediately. Do not use ice-cold water, which can cause additional complications.
