The Sacramento Police Department is increasing enforcement against impaired driving starting today as part of a nationwide campaign that continues through Labor Day weekend.
From Aug. 19 through Sept. 7, Sacramento police will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The increased enforcement is part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.
The department also will conduct DUI checkpoints Aug. 28 and Sept. 4 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at undisclosed locations within the city of Sacramento.
“Enjoying the last days of summer should be all about fun, and that starts with making safe choices before making plans,” Sacramento Police Sgt. Anna Mahoney said. “Everyone deserves to get home safely, and it starts with your everyday actions.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 11,904 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes nationwide in 2024, or about one person every 44 minutes.
Tips for staying safe
The Sacramento Police Department encourages drivers to:
- Plan ahead: If you plan to drink, arrange for a designated sober driver, use a ride-hailing service or taxi, or take public transportation.
- Buckle up: Wearing a seat belt is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself in the event of a crash.
- Stay alert: Avoid distractions such as texting or eating while driving and keep your attention on the road.
- Follow speed limits: Speeding reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes.
- Watch for people walking and biking: Stay alert for pedestrians and bicyclists, particularly in areas with increased foot and bicycle traffic.
- Take breaks: When traveling long distances, take regular breaks to rest and avoid fatigue.
Impaired driving is not limited to alcohol. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and cannabis products can also affect a person’s ability to drive safely. Anyone who plans to drink alcohol or take medication with a driving warning should arrange for a sober driver.

Funding for the enforcement program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
