City teams with paralympic sport clubs from across Northern California

The City’s Paralympic Sport Club is sponsoring a day of sports activities Tuesday, April 21, in Sacramento for wounded veterans or active military personnel. The Northern Californai Regional Paralympic Sport Club program comprising clubs from Menlo Park, Reno, Silicon Valley, Bay Area and Mammoth Lakes are joining forces to offer the free event.

The clubs are offering cycling, wheelchair softball and basketball, shot put, discus, javelin, powerlifting, scuba, strength training and conditioning, archery and rock climbing to thank the injured vets and military members for their service. At least 50 military participants and 150 spectators are expected to attend.

“Thank You For Your Service” Sports Experience Day

Tuesday, April 21, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Opening ceremony at 10 a.m. with guest speakers including Sacramento City Councilmember and retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Larry Carr; Marine veteran and two-time Paralympian Angela Madsen; and Ruthie Bolton, former WNBA superstar with the Sacramento Monarchs, gold medal Olympian, and Army veteran.

Sports activities take place following the opening ceremony to 12 noon and following lunch through 3 p.m. Lunch is being sponsored by the Hyatt Regency, Sacramento and water is being provided with proceeds from the Wounded Veteran Run.

“To all the members of the United States Armed Forces: On behalf of the City of Sacramento, we want to thank you for your service.This yearly event is a small token of appreciation of the sacrifices you have made to secure and defend the rights and freedoms of the United States of America. And for that, we salute you,” said City Council Member and retired Lt. Col. Larry Carr.

The City of Sacramento, Department of Parks and Recreation, Access Leisure Section, is one of only five programs in the country that serve as a regional liaison for the United States Olympic Committee, Paralympic Division.  The program is one of 69 grant recipients for the United States Department of Veterans affairs, Adaptive Sports Grant program.  This year, the City received a grant of nearly $67,000 to enhance and enrich the lives of injured, ill and wounded veterans through sports and recreation.
