Public Encouraged to Attend Open House.
The Downtown Riverfront Streetcar Project, which will bring streetcar service to West Sacramento and Sacramento, continues to meet milestones. The system’s Final Design phase is near completion, a new project website has launched, community meetings have begun, and construction is slated to begin in spring 2019.
Anyone can learn about the latest streetcar news at our informational public open house on Thursday, June 14. The open house will cover:
- Final Design Progress
- Station Planning – Amenities and Concepts
- Alignment / Station Locations
- Next Stop – Construction

Participants will have the opportunity to review displays, watch a brief presentation and speak with project team members. Comments can also be submitted via comment cards.

An online open house meeting will be available 24 hours a day from June 14-29. The online open house will have the same information that will be shown at the in-person open house and the ability to capture input during the two-week period.
Background
As Sacramento and West Sacramento continue to transform into vibrant places to live, work and play, moving people to their desired destinations with ease is vital for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.
Mobility, access and convenience within the active and evolving urban core is a top priority, and the Downtown Riverfront Streetcar will allow riders to reach key destinations in the corridor with ease.
The Riverfront Joint Powers Authority (JPA), a unique partnership between the cities of West Sacramento and Sacramento, and their project team have been diligently working on many activities in order to launch service in 2022.
During the project’s Final Design phase, the Joint Powers Authority was established to govern the future transit line. In addition, 85% design plans – which include the exact streetcar alignment, station locations throughout the corridor and location of the future Maintenance Facility – have been submitted to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
Submittal of 100% design plans to FTA will occur in mid to late summer, and include identification of the future streetcar vehicle and station design concepts.
What’s Involved?
Streetcar will extend 4.4 miles from West Sacramento Civic Center to Midtown entertainment and retail district in Sacramento.
The modern streetcar line will offer new choices for how people connect to the urban residential areas within the cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento, existing shopping, dining, lodging, cultural and entertainment landmarks, and employment centers as well as regional transportation services.
“We have developed a unique and collaborative partnership between both the cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento, and we are very excited to be at this point in the planning process,” said Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg.
Service will run in-street on fixed rails with overhead catenary wires, and operate 16 hours a day at 29 stops along the route connecting West Sacramento and Sacramento.

Implementation of streetcar into the greater Sacramento transit system will provide benefits locally and regionally by building an effective transportation network. The streetcar service will:
