What happens when construction affects connectivity? The City needs your feedback

When should a construction zone require detours? And how should these detours be designed to have as little impact as possible on people walking or biking?

Join Department of Public Works staff for a webinar at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, to learn more on this topic and provide input on the City’s work zone and event detour policy

The draft policy is currently live for review and aims to prevent detours as much as possible and maintain accessibility and connectivity for people walking, bicycling, scooting, or those with disabilities.

“Our goal is to ensure direct, convenient and comfortable paths of travel,” said Casandra Cortez, transportation planner with the department. “This webinar provides another opportunity for people to share their thoughts and experiences as we work to finalize the policy.”

The guidance will specify when and where people walking, scooting, and biking may be relocated, detoured, modified, and closed in city limits. It will apply to all sidewalks and streets on which people bicycling and walking are legally allowed to travel, including designated bikeways.

During the webinar, staff will provide an overview of the policy and then open for comments and questions by attendees. Comments can also be submitted on the City’s website until Wednesday, Feb. 14.

Those interested in learning more can register for the webinar via Zoom.
