People interested in serving as the interim Councilmember for City Council District 2 now can submit their application.

The Council seat, which represents areas in North Sacramento, was previously held by Sean Loloee, who resigned in January.

To qualify for the interim position, applicants must:

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the State of California
• Be a registered voter and a resident of Sacramento City Council District 2 not less than 30 days preceding the date of filing candidate papers.

The application and instructions can be found on this webpage. The application period closes at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 29.

The District 2 seat is one of four City Council seats currently up for election in Sacramento this March. Election winners traditionally are sworn in by the end of the calendar year.

Candidates currently running for the Office of Councilmember for District 2 may be considered for the interim appointment but must submit an application. There are no exceptions.

The City’s Personnel and Public Employees Committee is expected to interview qualified applicants for the interim position in the second week of March.

Following the interviews, the City Council will vote to select the person for the interim position. Swearing in for the interim councilmember is expected to occur in early April.

However, Mayor Darrell Steinberg has said that if a candidate running for the District 2 seat wins by more than 50% of the vote in March, the Council would consider appointing that person to the position immediately following the election.

If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the March primary election, the two candidates who receive the most votes will move on to the November general election. It is understood that these two candidates would not be considered for the interim appointment while they are running for election.
