Those looking to add a pet to their family might find the perfect match this weekend.
To address overcapacity issues, Front Street Animal Shelter is participating in California Adopt-a-Pet Day on Saturday, June 1.
More than 150 shelters will be a part of this statewide adoption day when all adoption fees will be waived. This event is made possible with funding from The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SF SPCA).
California Adopt-a-Pet Day is managed in partnership with CalAnimals, an organization that focuses on the success of California animal welfare and aims to help animals find loving homes.
With 124 dogs in residence and only 99 kennels available, Front Street Animal Shelter is one of many shelters struggling to maintain space and get animals adopted.
According to CalAnimals, the large influx of animals being brought into shelters in recent years is due to a severe nationwide shortage of veterinary professionals as well as a combination of other factors, such as inflation, pet-friendly housing restrictions and a lack of access to affordable spay and neuter services.
“Our shelter has been significantly over capacity for months, and our busiest time of year for intake is right around the corner with the 4th of July holiday,” said Ryan Hinderman, the shelter’s communications and customer service manager. “We’re counting on compassionate people to save the day this Saturday to make much-needed room ahead of this major influx.”
The shelter is also currently in the process of taking in 50 cats from a hoarding situation. Thanks to the support from ASPCA, SF SPCA and CalAnimals, Front Street Animal Shelter will be able to make room and find caring adopters for these pets in need.
