The City of Sacramento’s Office of Arts and Culture is accepting applications for the 2025 Emerging Curators Fellowship. This fellowship offers emerging curators in the Sacramento region a funded opportunity to develop and present two exhibitions at the Robert T. Matsui Gallery inside Sacramento City Hall.
The one-year fellowship includes a stipend and funding for two exhibitions, with support from a curatorial mentor.
“This fellowship allowed me to explore my practice as a curator,” said Bridgètt Rex, the City’s current Emerging Curators Fellow. “The Matsui Gallery’s unique space attracts diverse visitors, guiding me to consider not only what people would like to see but also what feelings they may need. This experience has helped me understand myself and the value of curation as a community tool.
Applications must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. on September 5.
Still a chance to see the first 2024 Fellowship exhibit
Current Fellow Bridgètt Rex curated the exhibit “When I Can,” on display at the City Hall Robert T. Matsui Gallery from May 31 to September 9. The exhibit showcases the artistic pursuits of caregivers, parents, and guardians during their off-hours, featuring 18 regional artists with diverse artistic journeys.
“This exhibition features a diverse variety of artists at various points in their artistic journey,” said Rex. “Artists who create when they can should be recognized no matter how far along their creative endeavor is.”
The Robert T. Matsui Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is wheelchair accessible.
