Over 1,100 needles cleared as City secures Colfax property, offers shelter and services

Following weeks of daily outreach that included the offer of alternate shelter, the City of Sacramento Monday morning sent an interdepartmental team to clear and secure its property at 2225 Colfax St., also known as Camp Resolution.

Staff from the Department of Community Response, Public Works, Code Enforcement, Animal Care, the Fire Department, the Police Department and others worked together to connect guests with available resources before removing 16 City-owned trailers from the site and preparing to clear the property.

Several other organizations also sent representatives to offer support and services to the departing guests.

“The operation on Monday aimed to ensure both the safety of the site and the well-being of its former guests, emphasizing a commitment to compassionate support and long-term solutions,” said Brian Pedro, director of the Department of Community Response.

To date, 13 individuals were referred and transported to City shelters and motels. Additionally, one individual was successfully reunited with their family. The City continues to offer shelter and case management services to former guests and is evaluating next steps for the site and trailers.

As the clearing progressed, the City removed a significant amount of debris and waste from the site. 92,580 pounds of various items had been cleared, including 10,000 pounds of metal waste and 1,150 needles.

Eleven dogs and three cats were relocated to the Front Street Animal Shelter.

A total of 47 vehicles were towed from the site, which included 16 City-owned trailers, 12 automobiles, 16 trailers or RVs, and three utility trailers.

During the law enforcement activities prior to and leading up to Monday’s action, SPD and partner agencies recovered over five pounds of illegal drugs with an approximate street value of $50,000.

Shelter and services

Over the last several weeks, outreach teams have offered alternative shelter options including motel rooms to accommodate the needs of certain guests, and connected guests with available resources.

On Monday, representatives from several organizations, including Wellspace Health, Sacramento County Behavioral Health, and Hope Cooperative, joined City staff at the property to provide support and services to those leaving the site.

Roseville Road

The City offered each person shelter at its Roseville Road campus or its Outreach and Engagement Center. Everyone who enters either location will be assigned a case manager who will work to identify potential housing opportunities and address barriers to achieving permanent housing. Both locations can accommodate one pet per household. Roseville Road offers accessible pallet homes, as well as accessible showers and bathrooms.

Registered owners seeking to locate their private vehicles or trailers should contact the Sacramento Police Department’s non-emergency number at 916-808-5471. Former guests wanting to retrieve their personal items from City-owned trailers should contact DCR by phone at 916-204-7634 or email SPD at impact@pd.cityofsacramento.org.

Currently, the 16 City-owned trailers will be securely stored for 60 days to allow guests the opportunity to claim any personal belongings of value.
