Community celebrates alley transformation in north Sacramento

The City of Sacramento recently celebrated the opening and art unveiling of the Dixieanne Neighborhood Clean & Green Alleys project.

This project was led by the Department of Public Works in collaboration with local artists and community members and transformed five residential alleys in Old North Sacramento into vibrant, active, and sustainable spaces with funding provided by Clean California grants.

At the celebration, attendees viewed the beautiful new custom paver art and creatively designed bollards, created by talented local artists, which now bring unique character and vibrancy to the alleys.

“This project is a shining example of what we can achieve when the community comes together to reclaim public right-of-way that was underutilized and known for illegal dumping,” said Fedolia “Sparky” Harris, project manager and principal planner with the department. “The Dixieanne alleys are now more than just functional spaces—they’re beautiful, inviting, and reflect the spirit of this neighborhood.”

The project also incorporated significant beautification efforts, including new residential fencing and tree plantings, alongside paving upgrades and stormwater management improvements through permeable pavers. These features enhance both the functionality and sustainability of the alleys while improving the neighborhood’s overall aesthetic.

District 2 Councilmember Shoun Thao joined the celebration giving away soccer balls provided by his office. Attendees enjoyed lunch together, creating a welcoming and festive atmosphere.
