Leaf season is over. Here’s how to manage yard waste and household junk pickup

Wondering what to do with your yard waste now that leaf season is over?

The final day to put out leaf piles for collection was Feb. 3. The City of Sacramento’s leaf season crews are completing their final round of claw collections, covering more than 93 city zones and collecting over 10,000 tons of yard waste during this leaf season.

As leaf season concludes, residents still have options to recycle yard waste. The easiest way to dispose of yard waste and organic material is by filling your organics container. Starting this month, the same claw crews will collect waste piles as part of scheduled household junk pickup appointments.

City customers are eligible for two free junk pickup appointments between February and October to dispose of bulky waste. Appointments can be scheduled by calling City Customer Service at 3-1-1 (or 916-264-5011 for those outside city limits), using the Sac311 app, or visiting Sac311.org.

While yard waste that doesn’t fit in the organics container can be included in a junk pickup appointment, it must be separated from other items. Branches should be cut to three feet in length and no more than four inches in diameter. Entire piles should not exceed four feet wide, four feet high, and nine feet long.

Residents should place materials out no more than 24 hours before their scheduled pickup. Piles placed out too early may be tagged as illegal to help ensure safe street access for City crews and traffic.

For proper disposal of household hazardous waste, such as batteries, paint, and pesticides, residents can use the Waste Wizard online sorting tool. These materials can be dropped off at designated household hazardous waste facilities.

“We aim to offer multiple resources for getting rid of junk in our Waste Wizard,” said Jesa David, spokesperson for the Recycling and Solid Waste Division. “Before sending items to the landfill, we encourage residents to explore options for repurposing, recycling, or donating them.”

In addition to household junk pickups, residents can schedule separate appointments for appliances or electronic waste. Special instructions apply to the placement of these items, which should not be included in household junk piles.
