The City of Sacramento is once again offering free compost to residents this spring, helping them enrich their gardens and yards while promoting sustainability and meeting state recycling mandates.
The compost is made from organic material collected through the City’s curbside organics recycling program, which includes food scraps and yard waste. The program supports California Senate Bill 1383, which requires jurisdictions to reduce organic waste in landfills and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
How to get compost
Residents can order compost now through Dec. 15, by setting up a free account with the City’s compost processor, Agromin, and using a coupon code available on SacRecycle.org. Select the product “Compost 100” at checkout.
-
Minimum order: Half a cubic yard (about one standard pickup truck bed). A truck or trailer is required for pickup.
-
Delivery option: Minimum order is three cubic yards, with an $85 delivery fee.
-
Annual limit: Households can receive up to six cubic yards per year, either by pickup, delivery, or a combination of both. One-half cubic yard covers approximately 50 square feet at a 3-inch depth.
Starting in May, the City will also offer bagged compost for residents who need smaller quantities and don’t have access to a truck or trailer. Details and appointment scheduling will be available on the program website.
How to use compost
Compost improves soil health and supports plant growth in several ways:
-
Soil amendment: Mix compost into soil to enhance structure, fertility, and water retention.
-
Top dressing: Apply a thin layer to lawns or garden beds for slow-release nutrients.
-
Compost tea: Steep compost in water to make a liquid fertilizer.
-
Seed starting mix: Blend with vermiculite or perlite to support seedlings.
