Front Street Animal Shelter is at critical capacity, and in an effort to place dogs into loving homes, all dog adoption fees are waived through May 25 with the goal to open up kennel space for incoming stray animals.
As the City of Sacramento’s municipal shelter, Front Street takes in multiple stray and lost dogs every day. When a dog gets adopted, it doesn’t just give a dog a second chance, it helps make space for more dogs in need.
These types of adoption promotions often give families the extra push they need to finally say yes to adding a new family member to their home, according to staff.
“Adopting an animal truly means giving an animal an opportunity to have a loving family,” said Phillip Zimmerman, Animal Care Services Manager. “We need compassionate individuals to step up and give these animals a second chance, and in return, experience the joy and love they can bring into adopters’ lives.”
Front Street offers the support of experienced adoption counselors who are available to assist with every step of the process. These counselors are knowledgeable about the dogs in the shelter and work with potential adopters to find a match that aligns with their home environment, lifestyle, and experience level—whether they are looking for an energetic companion or a calm, older dog.

All adopted dogs will be vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/neutered before going home. With a wide variety of dogs in both the shelter and foster homes, potential adopters are sure to find the perfect match.
“Those who are not ready to adopt at this time, can still make a difference by sharing this message with friends, family, or anyone considering a pet,” Zimmerman said. “A simple share could help connect a dog with their forever home.”
Front Street Animal Shelter encourages the community to visit the shelter, meet the dogs, and be a part of this lifesaving effort to help give these animals the second chance they deserve.
All adoptable dogs in the shelter and in foster care can be found through the adoptable dogs page online.
