Explore how local government works: Apply for the 2025 City Management Academy

The City of Sacramento is now accepting applications for the 2025 City Management Academy (CMA), a structured learning program designed to increase transparency, build community partnerships, and deepen public understanding of how local government functions.

Through weekly in-person sessions, CMA offers residents and business owners a behind-the-scenes look at City operations, from budgeting and policy development to public safety and infrastructure. The program encourages meaningful civic engagement by connecting participants with City staff, elected officials, and the essential services that shape Sacramento’s neighborhoods.

“The City Management Academy is more than just a learning program — it’s a gateway to civic engagement,” said Ari Green, Community Engagement Analyst. “Participants leave with a deeper understanding of how the City operates and how they can make a tangible impact in their neighborhoods and beyond.”

The 2025 session will be held in person from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays, Sept. 3 through Nov. 5, at City Hall, Room 1119. Dinner will also be provided at 5:30pm.

The curriculum includes presentations from over 20 departments and divisions, covering topics such as public safety, infrastructure, budget development, and policy-making.

Participants will also take part in a civic engagement activity, and optional field trips are planned to further enhance the experience. Childcare for children ages 6–12 will be available to ensure accessibility for families.

To be eligible, applicants must reside in the City of Sacramento or own a business in the city. Applicants must also be at least 16 years old. A $50 materials fee will apply to participate in the program. The materials fee can be waived on a case-by-case basis.

Those interested can find the application and more information about the City Management Academy here.

Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. July 18.
