Southside Park Pool will officially reopen to the public on Saturday, June 14, following extensive renovations that addressed aging infrastructure and safety concerns. Families are invited to enjoy free swimming through the weekend to celebrate. A ribbon cutting will take place ahead of the opening on June 14 at 12:30 p.m.
The reopening marks the end of a closure that began after the facility’s fiberglass lining began to fail during the 2022 season.
City staff from the departments of Public Works and Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment worked to restore the pool, overcoming unexpected structural issues and delays along the way to ensure the facility was safe, modern, and ready for the community to enjoy.
“It took a lot of dedication and teamwork in getting Southside Pool ready and we’re proud of what was accomplished,” said Assistant City Manager Ryan Moore. “We know how important this facility is to the neighborhood, and we’re proud to welcome everyone back to a space that brings people together.”
Mayor Kevin McCarty, who was serving as an Assemblymember at the time, secured $500,000 in state funding to address the necessary repairs.
“As an Assemblymember, I was proud to help secure funding for repairs to the Southside Park Pool,” said Mayor McCarty. “This facility will help keep the community connected and cool for many summers to come.”
Initial renovations, approved by City Council in May 2024, included removing the aging fiberglass, resurfacing the pool with white plaster, and installing new tiles, depth markers, and safety features.
As construction began, crews discovered deeper issues: leaking ductile iron drainage pipes and corroded copper return lines, delaying the anticipated opening that summer. These were replaced with durable PVC piping. The system for disposing of backwash chemical water was also upgraded to meet modern environmental standards.
“I’m thrilled to see the Southside Pool open again,” said Councilmember Phil Pluckebaum, who represents the district. “It’s an essential part of this community where families can cool off, connect, and create lasting memories all summer long.”
Located at 2107 6th Street, the pool will operate throughout the summer with programming, swim lessons, and recreational swim hours.
All other neighborhood pools will be open with $1 entry June 14 and 15.
