City leaders, Tribal representatives, educators, students and community members recently gathered at Sutter’s Landing Regional Park to celebrate the dedication of “The Living Balance,” a new mural by artist Liv Losee-Unger of ORLUarts.
The dedication marked the culmination of a public art initiative led by the City of Sacramento’s Office of Arts and Culture through its Art in Public Places program. The project was funded in part by a State of California grant and developed in collaboration with the City’s Department of Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment.
Spanning approximately 5,000 square feet, “The Living Balance” is a vibrant, multi-panel vinyl mural that brings to life the environmental and cultural heritage of the Sacramento region.
The mural is designed to serve as a teaching tool, with each element in the design referencing a piece of the environment or cultural history of the area we live in, said Losee-Unger during the event.
The artwork begins with imagery inspired by Native American creation stories and unfolds into a visual journey that highlights Sacramento’s riverside habitat and the interconnected ecosystems that define the area.
Visitors are encouraged to engage with the mural not only as a visual work, but also as an educational experience. A supplemental guide—developed by Losee-Unger in collaboration with Wilton Rancheria, local botanists and environmental experts—offers detailed insight into the mural’s themes, symbolism, and cultural references.
The guide is available on the City’s website and can also be accessed via a QR code posted on-site.
