City’s Roseville Road campus expands with more tiny homes for people experiencing homelessness

The City of Sacramento’s Roseville Road shelter-and-service campus will soon expand, adding more tiny homes to shelter people experiencing homelessness.

Semi-trucks carrying 135 ready-to-assemble “Boss Cubez” tiny homes began arriving at the campus on Aug. 5.

One hundred of these homes will be assembled and placed on the site’s northern lot, which is currently empty. The other 35 homes will replace travel trailers that are currently being used as shelter in the southern lot.

The new tiny homes will be connected to electricity, as each unit has its own heating and air conditioning system.

“We are extremely excited to be making such positive progress on this much-needed expansion project,” said Brian Pedro, director of the City’s Department of Community Response (DCR). “With its increased capacity, the Roseville Road campus will continue to play a major role in helping people in need and reducing unsheltered homelessness in our city.”

Pedro said he anticipates the new tiny homes will be ready for move-in by late November, largely because electrifying them involves significant infrastructure work at the site.

Service provider The Gathering Inn has been selected to operate the north side of the campus. First Step Communities will continue to operate the southern portion.

The Roseville Road campus expansion project is funded by the State of California and designed to serve people experiencing unsheltered homelessness in the area around the Sacramento Northern Parkway.

DCR in October 2024 received a $12.35 million Encampment Resolution Funds grant from the California Department of Housing and Community Development to purchase and construct additional tiny homes, improve overall infrastructure at the campus, expand outreach services in the community and enhance shelter and housing support. The grant also funds operations at the campus for two years.

Initially opened in 2024, the Roseville Road campus – located at a former U.S. Air National Guard facility – currently features approximately 100 tiny homes and trailers sheltering people experiencing homelessness.
