Move over, spring: Why fall is the best time to upgrade your yard and save water

Fall in Sacramento isn’t just about cooler weather and shorter days — Utilities staff say it’s the ideal season to transform your landscape.

“People often assume spring is the best time of year to plant, but it’s better to give your yard a head start by planting in the fall,” said William Granger, the City’s water conservation coordinator.

“Cooler weather and seasonal rains allow roots to grow deep before the summer heat, meaning your plants will need less water later.”

The City offers rebates to residents who make water-saving upgrades, including up to $3,000 to convert grass lawns into drought-tolerant landscaping and up to $800 for irrigation improvements such as drip systems or smart controllers.

According to Granger, these projects can save water and lower water bills over time.

“These rebates take away some of the financial barrier and make it easier for residents to invest in lasting improvements that save water, save money and support a healthier, more sustainable Sacramento for years to come.”
