October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Here are tips to stay safe online

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and the City of Sacramento’s Information Technology Department is encouraging residents and employees to sharpen their cyber skills, learn to avoid security threats and have some fun while doing it.

As cybercrime continues to rise, the City is highlighting the importance of cybersecurity not only in the workplace but also across the community through its Cybersafe Sacramento initiative.

“Cybersecurity isn’t just a technical issue, it’s a daily habit,” said Paolo Tandoc, the City’s Information Security Officer. “Every click, every login, and every interaction online is an opportunity to either strengthen or weaken our defenses. By staying alert and making smart choices, we can protect not only our own information but also the City’s systems and the community we serve. Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a reminder that together, we play a crucial role in keeping Sacramento cybersafe.”

According to the Public Policy Institute of California, more than three-quarters of California residents use the internet for financial transactions, such as banking, investing, paying bills or sending money. With technology playing such a central role in daily life, the risks of cyberthreats are greater than ever.

The City urges residents to stay informed, vigilant and proactive when it comes to preventing phishing, scams and other online threats.

Here are some key tips from the City to help you stay safe online:

  1. Recognize phishing attempts and online scams.

  2. Use strong, unique passwords.

  3. Set up multi-factor authentication (MFA).

  4. Keep software and devices up to date.

  5. Protect personal and financial information.

  6. Secure devices and home Wi-Fi networks.

  7. Learn how to report cybercrime.

Residents can visit the Cybersafe Sacramento website to learn more about these tips, access resources for families and businesses, and take the first step toward a safer online experience.
