Doing these simple things can help City crews during the upcoming rains

A series of storm systems is expected to affect the Sacramento region starting this weekend, with widespread precipitation and some winds expected.

City officials are asking residents to take proactive steps to prepare their homes and neighborhoods for potential storm impacts.

“Leaves and debris that can clog storm drains could be an issue during this series of storms,” said Carlos Eliason, City Department of Utilities spokesperson. “Making sure storm drains near you are clear is one of the best ways to help our staff out and prevent street flooding.”

Residents can do several things to prepare for storms:

  1. Use a broom or a rake to clear leaves and debris away from storm drains near you.
  2. Fill organic bins first before creating leaf piles.
  3. Follow leaf pile guidelines and keep them away from the gutter and storm drains.
  4. Secure outdoor furniture and decorations.

“Our crews will be monitoring conditions during the storm to respond to issues that may occur, including clogged drains and clearing debris from sidewalks and roads.”

Eliason says people can report storm issues — such as street flooding and downed branches — by contacting the City’s 311 customer service center.
