Looking for a Valentine? Take a shelter dog on a date

Still looking for Valentine’s Day plans? From Feb. 12 through Feb. 14, Front Street Animal Shelter is inviting the community to take an adoptable shelter dog out for a Valentine’s date during a special Doggie Day Out event.

Those interested must pre-register on Front Street Animal Shelter’s website. Dog pickup begins at 9 a.m., and dogs must be returned between 1 and 4 p.m.

“This is a fun way to celebrate Valentine’s Day while doing something that truly matters,” said Andrea Haverland, public information coordinator for Front Street. “A few hours of fresh air and one-on-one attention can make a big difference for our dogs, and it might even lead to a forever home.”

Participants will be paired with a dog weighing approximately 40 pounds or more. Most dogs are young, strong and ready for an adventure, according to staff. Dogs are assigned based on availability and which dogs need a break from the shelter the most.

Doggie date out

Once matched, volunteers can plan a dog-friendly date such as a walk on a local trail, a park visit or a stop for a pup cup. Dogs must remain on leash and may not interact with other dogs during the outing.

After the date, volunteers are asked to complete a short survey and upload photos to help build each dog’s adoption profile. Those who feel a connection are welcome to foster or adopt.

Sign-ups are required and space is limited. Learn more about the Doggie Day Out program here.
