Sacramento Fire Department celebrates 176 years of service

The Sacramento Fire Department is celebrating 176 years of service to the Capital City, marking a legacy that began Feb. 5, 1850.

In the mid-1800s, buildings in the area were largely made up of wooden structures, many covered with canvas. As the community grew, a series of fires threatened homes, businesses and the surrounding area, prompting residents to take action.

“We’re all part of something very special,” Fire Chief Chris Costamagna said. “We’ve been out there saving lives, fighting fires and floods since the early 1800s.”

On Feb. 5, 1850, those residents formed Mutual Hook and Ladder No. 1, establishing the first volunteer fire department in the western United States and laying the foundation for what would become today’s Sacramento Fire Department.

From its volunteer beginnings, the department has evolved into a modern, full-service organization serving a growing and diverse city. Today, Sacramento firefighters and paramedics provide emergency response, fire prevention, disaster preparedness and emergency medical services across the city.

As Sacramento continues to grow, the Sacramento Fire Department remains committed to protecting lives and property, strengthening community partnerships and maintaining the highest standards of public service while honoring a 176-year tradition of service.
