Gustavo Martinez appointed as new City Attorney by Sacramento City Council

The Sacramento City Council has appointed Gustavo L. Martinez as City Attorney, effective Feb. 10, 2026.

As City Attorney, Martinez will oversee the operations of the City Attorney’s Office, provide legal counsel to the City Council, Mayor and City departments and represent the City in civil matters.

“It is a privilege and an honor to be appointed the 40th City Attorney of this great City,” Martinez said. “I appreciate the confidence the Council has placed in my leadership, and I am particularly proud to lead the exceptionally talented team in the City Attorney’s Office.”

“Having served alongside these dedicated professionals since 1997, I know firsthand their commitment to excellence,” he continued. “Together, we will continue to serve the people of Sacramento with integrity, deep institutional expertise and an unwavering focus on the public good.”

Martinez brings nearly three decades of public service to the role, along with extensive institutional knowledge and leadership experience. He joined the City Attorney’s Office in 1997 and has served as Deputy City Attorney, Supervising Deputy City Attorney and, most recently, Chief Assistant City Attorney.

In his previous role, Martinez oversaw complex legal operations, advised City leadership and guided work across public safety, community development and litigation. His work strengthened the City’s ability to protect residents, advance lawful development and address quality of life concerns in neighborhoods throughout Sacramento.

Mayor Kevin McCarty praised the appointment and expressed confidence in Martinez’s leadership.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have Gustavo as our City Attorney,” McCarty said. “I have seen his work up close for more than 20 years; he has proven to be an exemplary public servant. I have absolute confidence in his leadership and judgement.”
