See who’s moving into the Steamers Building on the Old Sacramento Waterfront

A new beer garden concept is headed to the Old Sacramento Waterfront.

The Sacramento City Council on Tuesday approved a sublease agreement with Der Biergarten Waterfront to operate a walk-up café in the historic Steamers Building at 1108 Front St.

Led by local business owner Sean Deerfield, the concept will feature a German beer garden atmosphere with communal tables, German food and beverages and local craft beer.

“This is the kind of vibrant, community-focused concept we envisioned for the Old Sacramento Waterfront,” said Valerie Mamone, project manager with the City’s Office of Innovation and Economic Development. “It builds on our reinvestment efforts and gives residents and visitors another reason to spend time along the river.”

The Steamers Building features about 750 square feet of indoor space and about 1,550 square feet of outdoor seating along the Embarcadero.

The café is part of the City’s broader Waterfront Reinvestment Program, a multi-phase effort to revitalize the district with upgraded public spaces, improved infrastructure and more inclusive storytelling that reflects the region’s full history.

Waterfront Reinvestment Program

The Waterfront Reinvestment Program includes replacement of aging boardwalk boards, development of a Native American-themed children’s play area in partnership with local tribes and design and construction of new Public Market Buildings along Front Street to create a more active, food-focused gathering space.

Construction of a new riverfront deck at 1110 Front St. has been completed using state grant funding, and the City is currently in negotiations with a potential operator for the flagship waterfront restaurant at that location.
